Envivio Genesis Architecture Reshapes Multi-Screen Video Delivery

Innovative and Flexible Processing Approach will Allow Operators to Plug in Support for New Devices at Point of Delivery, at a Fraction of the Cost of Dense Encoding

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ --Envivio, the leading provider of live and on-demand multi-screen IP video processing and delivery solutions, will unveil its new Envivio Genesis(TM) architecture for video head ends and Content Delivery Networks (CDN) at the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo (booth 1537) Oct. 20-22 in New Orleans. The visionary new solution relies on two essential components: the Envivio multi-screen head end for high quality audio/video processing and compression, and the Envivio Network Media Processors (NMP) in charge of packaging, encryption and distribution inside the CDN. The encoded media is delivered from the head end to the NMPs in the intermediate Envivio Genesis mezzanine format, enabling operators to use a single head end to handle all of their processing requirements, regardless of the number and type of target devices and networks.

"Operators are thinking about more than just the act of delivering TV entertainment to multiple screens. They are searching for solutions that will enable them to streamline workflows, add new devices to their network quickly, tackle scalable video coding needs, and address the security concerns of their content partners," said Envivio President and CEO Julien Signes. "With our 'processing in the network' approach, Envivio is applying nearly a decade of multi-screen experience to provide answers to the questions that are critical to the long term success of operators. Our Genesis architecture provides intelligent, simplified workflows and delivers flexibility to adapt and add support for a steadily changing variety of devices, streams and formats."

The Envivio Genesis architecture will take advantage of three key innovations:

    1. Current head ends require separate silos of equipment to meet the
individual requirements of an operator's broadcast, Internet, and mobile
services. The Envivio Multi-screen head end eliminates the redundancies
in such a system, using a single head end to handle video compression for
all services. Encoding is performed once by a centralized Envivio
4Caster(TM) C4 system, which outputs a single Envivio Genesis
intermediate mezzanine format that can then support all the required
resolutions and bit rates for live and on demand services for every
device on the network. Thanks to the native multi-screen and Extreme(TM)
Compression capabilities of 4Caster, the most advanced and sophisticated
pre-processing and compression algorithms are applied across all output
streams for the best visual results.
    2. The Envivio Genesis architecture requires only a single core content
delivery backbone or satellite uplink for distribution of the common
intermediate mezzanine format, instead of carrying a specific packaged
and encrypted format for each device, each on its own different delivery
network. This dramatically reduces backbone bandwidth requirements and
       streamlines network management and monitoring.
    3. Final packaging and encryption for distribution to specific devices and
platforms is handled by Envivio NMPs that can be added as needed to
support new devices without impacting the head end or the core network
delivery backbone. The Envivio NMP provides a logical platform for
audience-specific content insertion, encryption and transport adaptation
       for different networks.

"We have also considered requirements such as ad insertion and premium on demand services that will enable operators to monetize each content stream independently," added Signes. "The Envivio Genesis architecture gives rise to a new breed of head end and content delivery network, built from the ground up for a new era in television."

The Genesis architecture preserves the market-leading video quality and feature set of Envivio's current solutions, making it easy for a facility to convert gracefully to IP-based video delivery and deliver services to mobile, PC and TV screens from a single integrated platform. The Envivio NMP is presently in trial with the some of the world's largest Cable and Telecom operators and is available now to select, early access customers. Envivio expects to ship the NMP to the general public in early 2011.
