67-Year-Old Alzheimer's Patient Quickly Recovered by NYPD after Wandering More than a Mile from Home in Near-Freezing Temperatures
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y., Feb. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A 67-year-old man with Alzheimer's disease is now safely back at home with his wife after wandering outside in near-freezing temperatures thanks to the quick action of the New York Police Department and a watch-like EmSeeQ®( )wearable locator device.
Robert Campbell was recovered within an hour after his wife, Marilyn, discovered him missing. He was located on Victory Boulevard, more than a mile from his home. Temperatures at the time were in the mid-30s and Mr. Campbell was wearing only jeans, a sweater and a cap, along with the EmSeeQ locator bracelet. The wristwatch-style device uses the nationwide U-TDOA cellular technology to accurately and rapidly determine the location of the device wearer, enabling rescuers to find him or her quickly and reduce the risk of grave injury or even death should the individual become lost or intentionally elope.
Mrs. Campbell called for activation of the device around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Officers of the 122 Precinct were dispatched to the location provided by the EmSeeQ device and returned Mr. Campbell home safely to his wife.
