AT&T Expands Mobile Broadband Wireless Capacity in Northern Virginia
Additional Spectrum Expected to Improve Connectivity and Performance of Mobile Broadband Data and Voice Connectivity
FAIRFAX, Va., April 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Customers in northern Virginia are expected to experience improved mobile broadband and voice performance as a result of continued investment and innovation by AT&T*. The company announced today that it has completed a key initiative in its ongoing efforts to enhance the wireless capacity and performance of its mobile broadband network throughout parts of Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun counties.
The network enhancement adds new layers of frequency, also known as "carriers," to more efficiently manage available spectrum and increase mobile broadband capacity at more than 100 local cell sites in northern Virginia. The expansion helps manage ever-growing demand for mobile broadband services by allocating more network resources for AT&T's mobile broadband network.
Areas benefiting from the boost in wireless capacity include:
-- Prince William County: Manassas, Manassas Park, Bristow, Gainesville,
Haymarket, and Bull Run communities
-- Fairfax County: Oakton, Chantilly, Tyson's Corner, McLean, Idylwood,
Fairfax, Vienna, Centreville, Wolf Trap, Reston, and Herndon communities
as well as along heavily-traveled I-66
-- Loudoun County: Leesburg, Ashburn, Sterling, and Dulles communities as
well as along Route 267

AT&T's mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world.
