AT&T Continues Its Ongoing Investment In Atlanta With Local Network Enhancements

Local Enhancements Part of AT&T's 2011 Plan to Invest in the $20 Billion Range in its Nationwide Wireless and Wireline Networks

ATLANTA, Aug. 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --AT&T* continues its ongoing investment in Atlanta with local wireless network enhancements, including expanded backhaul to enable 4G speeds, increased mobile broadband capacity and new and upgraded cell sites. These enhancements are part of AT&T's plan to invest in the $20 billion range in its nationwide wireless and wireline networks in 2011 and build on its strong record of network accomplishments in 2010. AT&T has implemented the following network improvements in Atlanta year-to-date:

--  Deployed enhanced backhaul connections to more than 500 cell sites to
enable 4G speeds and add capacity to support more mobile broadband
        traffic.
--  Installed 10 new cell sites in metro Atlanta and 39 new cell sites in
        Georgia to improve network coverage.
--  Added spectrum carriers or an extra layer of channels to more than 577
cell sites to support more traffic.
--  Deployed new and upgraded existing Distributed Antenna System (DAS)
networks at 12 venues to enhance network coverage during events.
--  Launching AT&T Wi-Fi at Turner Field to further enhance the fan
        experience during home games.

"AT&T is an industry pioneer and is working to deliver the best mobile broadband network to our customers, and these network improvements will continue to enhance the customer experience," said Sylvia Russell, state president, AT&T Georgia. "In addition, our recently announced agreement to acquire T-Mobile USA represents a major commitment to strengthen and expand our network. If approved, this deal means that we'll be able to expand the next generation of mobile broadband - 4G LTE - from our current plan of 80 percent of the U.S. population to more than 97 percent."

AT&T invested more than $2 billion in its Atlanta wireless and wireline network from 2008 through 2010 as part of its commitment to superior service in the area.

AT&T's mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the broadest international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries.

AT&T also operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network** with nearly 27,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to nearly 190,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn't count against customers' monthly wireless data plans.
