R&M Uses Xena Test Equipment to Validate 'Zero Packet Loss' at 40G Ethernet Over Extended Distances

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, October 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

New White Paper from R&M examines how the right cabling and transceivers can
significantly increase network performance by reducing packet loss.

A new White Paper released by R&M documents how network performance can be
significantly increased by achieving zero packet loss when transmitting at 40 Gigabit
Ethernet over extended distances.

Realizing that conventional power-loss measurement methods cannot deliver all the
necessary information about link performance, R&M elected to use Gigabit Ethernet test
equipment from Xena Networks to verify their performance benchmark tests for R&M's High
Performance Network Connectivity (HPNC).

Network performance can be significantly increased by reducing packet loss. Data
packets consist of fixed-size frames, as well as actual data (payload), in a variety of
sizes. To optimize network performance, the payload size must be maximised and the
overhead minimised. However, bit errors may result in a loss of packets, which then have
to be retransmitted - which means (often cumulative) delays.

The outcome of the tests conducted by R&M validated the combination of R&M's MTP(R)
cabling system and Finisar's QSFP+ parallel fiberoptics module to enable 'zero packet
loss' transmission 40G Ethernet extended-reach solution.

R&M specifies 330m over OM3 cabling and 600m over OM4 cabling, each with four MTP(R)
connections in between. This innovation means that the data centre industry can more
easily serve distances beyond the 100m OM3 and 150m OM4 currently specified in the IEEE
802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 standard.
