My Bite Buddy: How Collaboration Made An Idea Into A Reality

PORTLAND, Ore., Jan. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- There are few experiences that rival the beautiful simplicity of a day of fishing. Take away the need to hold the pole for hours on end, and add the freedom to wander or do other work, chat with pals, or just kick back and relax while the fish come to you. This is what inventor and avid fisherman Mike Little had in mind when he first envisioned the product that would become Bite Buddy, a device that attaches to your fishing pole to send your smartphone-powered app alerts on fish bites and catches. Mike searched the internet for a product like this for sale, but his searches came up empty, so he decided it was up to him to create such a tool, and he started working with an engineer on the physical parts of the device.

At this point Mike knew exactly what he wanted to do and selected Harlo Interactive, a NE Portland digital creative agency with an emphasis on mobile application, software and web design and development to assist. Harlo's software engineers developed a simple tester app to read the movements and engage with the circuit board to see if the concept could work. Mike taped the board to a fishing pole and the team was able to get real-time usable data about the rod's movements, and eventually were able to use that data to sense when a fish was biting or a fish was on the hook.  The data generated by the device streams to the app on the user's smartphone to trigger alerts of "fish bites" and "fish on," with a notification range of up to 175 feet away from the fishing pole.

The finished application has customized alert tones, notifications, line sensitivity adjustments, and allows users to share photos of their catch with friends via social media, and even enter to win gear giveaways or an annual fishing trip. It also features current weather and local tide information.

While Harlo can't necessarily promise to deliver actual magic, they are certainly always up for a challenge. "We love taking on projects like this that allow us to utilize our creative and technical capabilities to deliver for our client," says Partner at Harlo, Cody Galloway. "This project was really exciting because we were able to help create something new in the marketplace."
