Duh, that's what it is planned for. Digitimes reports that the K8 core will be used to fight the P4. Among other things, the chip will be made at FAB 30 while 32bit Athlons will be outsourced by UMC.

According to the company’s schedule, the new desktop-use Athlon will hit the market in October, while shipments of the Opteron processors are expected to start in the first half of 2003. Lee added that the shipment ratio of the K8-core processors should be able to exceed that of the company’s 32-bit, K7-core products as early as 2003.
