Getting my XFX 7800gt working again... Old Fri Feb 16, 2007 10:59:55 AM #34175 Perm Link
So I installed the acrtic cooling accelero x1 to my 7800gt and now my gpu is cooler than ever, but it can't finish a 3dmark run even when underclocked. First thing I'm going to try is re-seating the card, but anyways I should let you all know about the pain in the ass of making it fit: First off, I had to remove the stablitization bar XFX has on the side of the card to fit this massive cooler. Next I had to tweak this little metal bar that hangs from the back of the card (and goes about half an inch onto the card's surface: it's only use? it bears a UPC code @_@) then when I installed the cooler the tapered end of copper heatpipes rub right up against the leads to the secondary (or maybe primary? can't remember now) DVI output.

You think the copper hitting those leads could be it?

It is possible, but I wouldn't think it would do anything to the card. Just put a piece of electrical tape on it to find out.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

Yup that's what I was thinking as well, it can't hurt anything after all. ^^ My wife just called and the PC restarted while just going through myspace so it's probably just seated improperly since it was on all last night defragging just fine and in my experience when a card is a bit wiggly it tends to do that sort of thing.

Worst part of this experience: seeking help of fellow XFX 7800GT users only to find out there are two revisions of this product: One that is a total bitch when it comes to using third party coolers (mine); and one that uses anything easily...

how come you didn't contact xfx and get the card replaced.

'Cause I voided the warranty the minute I put on an aftermarket cooler, even though the one it came with wasn't good enough to keep it stable at the factory overclock. @_@

Anyways, I figured it out, the card was bent just a little bit where the cooler is touching the connectors, which is keeping one of the RAM modules from getting 100% contact with the sink. So for now I underclocked the memory and that's keeping things stable, as soon as I can I'm going to further mod this card (read as: hack to pieces) as to alleviate this problem. Anyways, the cooler's working great, all my components are cooler by a few degrees.

The leads could somehow be getting interfered by the copper.

Good luck with getting that to work!

that sucks. I had no idea that xfx void the warranty if you took the heatsink out. Man, youa re ruining a perfectly good card (how I wish to have a card like thatSmile). It will be interesting to see what else you find.

Well after filing away at the plastic on the connector I managed to get the new heatsink to fit correctly without hurting anything, and as it turned out my instability problems were being caused by my motherboard which acts like a total bitch if i plug anything into the USB plugs ><. That actually made sense since about a week back I wasn't able to charge my ipod through them...So anyways now I'm going to pick up a new mobo, and not an asrock this time.
