Getting over the 137GB HDD cap Old Thu Jul 5, 2007 5:44:09 PM #39805 Perm Link
Just installed WinXP on the new computer I built. However, when I formatted the partition, it only claimed that the drive had a max capacity of 137GB as opposed to 400 (it's a 400GB Seagate SATA HDD). I already upgraded to Service Pack 2 and used Seagate's software, DiskWizard, to try to expand the capacity, but nothing's working. Even when I was about to format the drive yet again, it said the capacity was 137GB. Any ideas?

Edit: Nevermind. Found a solution. http://www.48bitlba.com/winxp.htm

"New install of Windows XP to new 48-bit LBA hard drive. If you are doing a new install of Windows XP you need to make sure the installation CD is labeled "Including Service Pack 1". If your Windows XP install CD is prior to Service Pack 1, which mine did you can still utilize the full capacity of your 48-bit LBA drive by upgrading to SP1 after Windows XP is installed then using a 3rd party partition tool like PowerQuest Partition Magic to expand the partition created by Windows install to full capacity."

Any recommendations for a 3rd party partition tool? :X

You could try to use a linux live CD to resize the partition. Partition magic also works...

But I wouldn't bother, just make a second partition. It is the standard stupid Windows way to make one huge partition, but you should be in the habit of making multiple ones. Keep the OS on one and the data on another.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

Thanks Aron. Somehow I wasn't able to make a second partition, so I ended up using Partition Magic instead, but then again, I suppose I could make multiple partitions using it as well, though.....

Edit: Split it into 2 partitions, 1 100GB OS partition and 1 280GB data partition.
