will this last me in this world of high end games (ie: Half Life 2). will be good for handeling games, and will it be fast for day to day computing?

Stay away from the 8600GTS. I have one and put back my 6600 series card.

At least under Linux, the 8600 series sucks ass. Plus the 8800GT is pretty cheap and much faster.

You should also consider ATI/AMD cards. Nice and open.

My next card will be an AMD one. Finally, open video drivers for a good card!

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!
