Considering buying one over the summer.

Is this worth the money? $899 seems like a good price. With a few upgrades I think it could be alright for a college student to take to class, write papers, surf the internet through class, etc. I also like the tablet pc functionality of it.

With that graphics card, anything Vista offers you is made redundant. I will sound like a broken record, but if you ask for it, they will install XP for you and lop off a notable portion of the price. I would also get the bigger battery

Tablets were a good idea, but the implementation is now flawed. I wouldn't bother with a tablet.

Any laptop you get, I would make sure you can run Linux on it. In fact, you might want to get a laptop with Linux preinstalled and save the fee for Windows.

I also agree about an extended size battery. If you want to use it in college, the last thing you want to do is stop playing a game in the middle of a class because of battery power.

What are your needs? $899 is not worth the price today. You can get far better deals.

6150s have problems running Windows Media Player. I doubt he would get much gaming regardless.

Yeah the tablet wouldn't be used for gaming or anything, but I think vista would be the option for that particular laptop because it offers far better tablet functionality than XP.

As far as running Linux on the laptop, I'm not sure if I need it. I'm a casual PC user with far too much work due to internships, jobs, deadlines for articles//short stories, and school papers, notes, etc. Linux and the whole open source, free, thing is something I support the idea of, but I don't feel I possess the technical savvy to really take advantage of what Linux has to offer. Maybe at another point in my life I'd like to learn, but I don't know if I could put forth that effort right now. I guess I do have a summer to become acquainted with the OS though, so I don't know.

I guess I am kind of partial to the idea of a tablet, but if you have suggestions I'm open to them. I'm not as hardheaded as I come off in other topics (even less so when it comes to money).

If you're worried that I'm going to use the tablet for gaming or anything like that, don't worry. If I did ever play a game on there it would be something equivalent to Myst, or StarCraft//WarCraft. I have a desktop that I use for gaming and not even that often. The tablet would be strictly for classes, internet browsing, maybe watching a movie or two, maybe playing Myst in class, or whatever, but nothing extensive.

As far as the battery goes, I wanted to go for the 8-cell. I'm just worried it might jut out causing the tablet to be awkward to hold (especially when in tablet form). I'm sure the battery could last longer if some settings on the tablet are reduced or something. The 8 cell is definitely the one I'm leaning toward though.


But again, open to suggestions...

I'm looking to spend around $1200. This includes warranty, any upgrades, shipping//handling, etc.
I also want a tablet. I'm a sucker for the flashy stuff, what can I say? Feel free to convince me with better-priced laptops//deals, though.
I want something in the 12'' range, no larger than 15''. I think 15 might even be too big, but like I said, if it's a good deal I can be flexible. No smaller than 12'' though, I think that would be too small and too awkward to try to type on.
Hard drive space really isn't an issue. The 120-250 usually offered on a laptop is fine for my uses.
RAM... I guess 2 GB standard. That is the standard now-a-days, right? I mean, that tablet offers a free upgrade to 2 gigs and I think that would be fine for every day use.
Processing speed, I dunno.. anything above 2.1? I'm not doing any high-end graphic editing or hardcore gaming. The newest game I want to play is StarCraft 2, but I am going to get//use a desktop for that.
Wireless capabilities... I guess anything with b/g is good. Those are the most commonly used types, right? I like the option to upgrade to a/n as well in case those become to dominant types, but I dunno.
Optical drives should have all the basics: be able to burn//read cds, and at least watch dvds.

Anything else is gravy, really.

My opinion on Linux shouldn't sway you if you want to stick with Windows, but it is a good option. You can even try it out without overwriting anything and Ubuntu installs everything automatically now.

Anyway, I would also say that Bluetooth is a given and for your top price of $1200, a Macbook is looking yummy... (Again, that's a personal choice).

You'll want something in the 13.3" or smaller range to keep the weight low. You don't want to carry anything heavy.

Base Macbooks really suck, though, and they are the only ones available for that price area.

Yeah, I mean, I'm looking to buy this within four months, so; I'm saving up over the summer and then one month of school. I've budgeted about $1200 as the money I should be able to save up in this time, with bills, a trip or two, and a girlfriend included in this cost. That's why I'm sort of peaking at that. It seems like if I wait longer, (6+ months) I might as well just wait until the summer after this one. Again though, I don't know. I'm not as technically savvy as some on these forums which is why I was wondering what you all thought.
