Paper I'm building a computer; is this a alright computer? Old Wed Dec 22, 2004 10:37:09 PM #10650 Perm Link
Ok, so for Christmas my dad said I could get all the parts I need for a computer, but I used a couple of old parts. I was on a budget so...

Motherboard: Asus P4V8X-X
CPU: Pentium 4 2.26 Ghz w/ fan
Video card: Gigabyte Radeon 9250
Sound card: On-board.
Memory: Infinteon or something, 128MB DDR
Case: CasEdge, it's silver and stuff
Hard drive: Wesern Digital 20 GB, it's a bit used up, say, 4 years. ^^
CD drive: Liteon DVD-ROM drive 16x (CD speed is 48x)
Floppy drive: Some random one I had.

EDIT: This computer is for a front-end arcade thing.. the games take up about 10 gigs, so that's why it isn't a masterpiece. Iy'll be used for games only.

You'll want more RAM. At least 256MB to run XP. Your hard drive space is a bit small, but if you won't fill it, it is fine. I personally don't use much space. What game are you loading on it?

Thanks for welcoming me.

As for the games the're like, games such as Marvel vs. Capcom, Street Fighter and such. About 500+ games all together. All run on a emulator called MAME, with a front-end called MAMEWAH.

I was thinking with my Christmas money I'd get either a better HD or more memory.. which should I get?

More RAM will help enormously. Emulators need CPU and RAM to run correctly. That's a pretty interesting use for a computer. I must consider doing the same to one of mine. Stick a few gamepads on it, instant game machine. Very nice idea.

Neat, good luck. Lotsa wiring for me with the joysticks and buttons. Good thing I'm using a interface called I-Pac, which takes out the hastle of hacking into a keyboard... and no ghost keys! ^^; Thanks for the advice, I'm turning in for the night, thanks, and have a good day/night.
