I know nothing about hardware ... Old Sun May 3, 2009 11:46:08 AM #88251 Perm Link
I'm considering attaining a new desktop computer, but literally have no idea what I should get. I'm throwing either Arch or just Ubuntu on it, but don't know what would be best for that. I'm not really planning to do any serious gaming or anything on it. I just want a good amount of hard drive space and RAM. Any ideas? I was going to build one from scratch (and still may do so if it's a good idea), but if anyone knows of any pre-made that sell for a decent price, I'd love to know. Smile

Build it yourself and you learn alot more...

A 1TB HDD is a good deal now... »http://www.aselabs.com/shopping.php?region=US&channelid=0&kw=1tb+hard+drive

I'd say a Western Digital or Seagate.

Get a good motherboard and power supply. Which type of board depends on if you want AMD or Intel.

Are you going to do any sort of 3D stuff on the computer or need OpenCL power? I hate to recommend Nvidia over ATI, but they have better Linux support RIGHT NOW even though ATI released their documentation.

Use x86-64 bit Linux and get 4GB or 6GB of RAM.

So what type of CPU are you thinking about?

Go With AMD, if your looking for a powerful, yet cheap machine, but intel processors seem to be through the roof these days.

Honestly, I'm just going to use the PC to hold/watch movies/music, access the Internet, and write papers for college.

The best idea would be check what companies like Compaq and IBM are putting in their desktop computers, see the configuration and try to get the same stuff for your own computer.
