Northrop Grumman Sets World Record with One-Terahertz Circuit, Achieves One Trillion Cycles per Second
MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif., Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC), a leader in advanced microelectronics, has developed the world's fastest integrated circuit amplifier, which has been recognized by Guinness World Records. The amplifier uses 10 transistor stages to reach an operating speed of one terahertz (10(12) Hz), or one trillion cycles per second--surpassing the company's own performance record of 850 billion cycles per second set in 2012.
Terahertz is a slice of the electromagnetic spectrum that lies between microwaves and infrared light waves. Researchers have long sought to exploit this tremendously high-frequency band, commonly referred to as the "terahertz gap," but have been unable to detect, process and radiate the necessary high-frequency signals without resorting to frequency translation or multiplication.
The Northrop Grumman terahertz monolithic integrated circuit (TMIC) effectively bridges this gap by using a super-scaled 25 nanometer gatelength indium phosphide high electron mobility transistor that measures at a gain of 10 decibels at 1 terahertz and nine decibels at 1.03 terahertz. In comparison, present day smartphones operate at 1 to 2 gigahertz and wireless networks at 5.7 gigahertz.
Developed on behalf of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the circuit is the culmination of the company's three-phase contract with the agency to demonstrate transistor-based electronics operating at 670 gigahertz, 850 gigahertz and 1 terahertz. All three milestones were successfully completed by Northrop Grumman within five years.
"This breakthrough by the Northrop Grumman team could lead to revolutionary technologies such as high-resolution security imaging systems, improved collision-avoidance radar, communications networks with many times the capacity of current systems and spectrometers that could detect potentially dangerous chemicals and explosives with much greater sensitivity," said Dev Palmer, program manager, Microsystems Technology Office at DARPA.
Additional applications could include atmospheric sensing, radio astronomy and medical imaging. It is also expected to improve system range, and reduce size, weight and power consumption of existing systems.
"A decade ago, there was no consensus in the scientific community whether an integrated circuit operating at one terahertz was technologically possible," said William Deal, program manager, terahertz electronics, Northrop Grumman. "An interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers worked together in scaling all facets of our MMIC technology to enable this result. Now, as a result of DARPA's investment in high-speed transistor processes, it will become routine to fabricate wafers containing thousands of terahertz integrated circuits."
DARPA has made strategic investments in terahertz electronics through its High Frequency Integrated Vacuum Electronics (HiFIVE), Sub-millimeter Wave Imaging Focal Plane Technology (SWIFT) and Technology for Frequency Agile Digitally Synthesized Transmitters (TFAST) programs. Each program built on the successes of the previous one, providing the foundational research necessary for frequencies to reach the terahertz threshold. Lowe's Innovation Labs introduces retail service robots to help customers shop smarter, navigate stores more efficiently, and instantly access information to confidently complete home improvement projects
MOORESVILLE, N.C., Oct. 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- This holiday season, Lowe's Innovation Labs will introduce two autonomous retail service robots in an Orchard Supply Hardware store in midtown San Jose, California to study how robotics technology can benefit customers and employees.
Called OSHbot, the robots will assist customers to quickly navigate stores by directing them to specific products and providing real-time information about product promotions and inventory. In the coming months, OSHbot will also be able to communicate with customers in multiple languages and remotely connect with expert employees at other Orchard stores to answer specific project questions.
"Using science fiction prototyping, we explored solutions to improve customer experiences by helping customers quickly find the products and information they came in looking for," said Kyle Nel, executive director of Lowe's Innovation Labs. "As a result we developed autonomous retail service robot technology to be an intuitive tool customers can use to ask for help, in their preferred language, and expect a consistent experience."
For store employees, OSHbot will provide an additional layer of support by helping customers with simple questions, enabling more time for them to focus on delivering project expertise. Applications designed to support employees also include real-time inventory management and connecting with employees in other locations to share know-how and answer customer questions.
The OSHbot incorporates scanning technology first developed for the Lowe's Holoroom home improvement simulator. For example, a customer may bring in a spare part and scan the object using OSHbot's 3D sensing camera. After scanning and identifying the object, OSHbot will provide product information to the customer and help guide them to its location on store shelves.
The OSHbot was developed through a partnership between Lowe's Innovation Labs and Fellow Robots, a Silicon Valley technology company specializing in the design and development of autonomous service robots. The partnership was initiated through SU Labs, a Singularity University program that connects corporate innovation teams with startups and other organizations to explore exponentially accelerating technologies and create new sustainable business solutions.

Unlike conventional AC driver solutions which use a single large driver, iML has patented a unique distributed architecture of multiple small, low cost drivers. This solution provides increased flexibility and a lower overall BOM cost as it uses much lower voltage technologies. It also improves heat dissipation as multiple devices are used across the PCB, evenly distributing the thermal load. IML devices remove the need for electrolytic capacitors and inductors that are mandatory for AC-DC driver solutions while delivering lower BOM costs.
The new iML8684 offers improved circuit stability in sub 3-volt AC situations created by TRIAC dimming, resulting in superior light quality at low dimming. This improvement also increases the number of compatible dimmers in both 120VAC and 230VAC countries.

The Indra500 TTL's Second Curtain Sync Functions brings untold functionality to the table. Photographers can't do that with a traditional studio light.
