»Practice What You Preach

It turns out that Business 2.0 does not practice its own advice of making sure to backup regularly. Their June issue was lost and no backup was done due to a problem. Sucks.

Quote

You remember the time when mom used to tell not to talk on the phone while ironing clothes lest you make a mistake and burn yourself. And then one day she forgot to practice what she was preaching and…! Well a funny situation like this has occurred in the business world too. Business 2.0 is a magazine published by Time. They have been warning their readers against the hazards of not taking backups of computer files. So much so that in an article published by them in 2003, they 'likened backups to flossing - everyone knows it's important, but few devote enough thought or energy to it.' And one fine day, sorry night, (April 23 to be precise) the magazine's editorial system crashed, nullifying the work done for the June issue. The backup server failed to back up.

I think that's amazing that companies like that don't back up! How could you think you're immune to that sort of thing? Admittedly, I don't back up every single thing . . . but I'm vigilant about the important stuff (all of my academic work!!!, music, photos, program files, whatever). Some things I can afford to lose but others? No way!

I back up anything I don't want to lose. If it's iffy, I back it up. I'd rather be backed up than sorry!

I think it is important to make sure everything you want is in your home directory. As long as you backup /home, everything should be cool.

It is when stuff gets scattered all over the drive like on Windows.

2014 is going to be a good year. More content, more streamlining. Be a part of history!

I would have to agree that I am surprised to see that they didn't back up everything. I backup everything that I feel I cannot afford to lose and then some.

I try to make a DVD backup of my files on a regular basis. I probably should do it weekly, but usually do it every two weeks.

Better to be safe than sorry. Back-up is the only ways to go.

In response to echos #39370
We swap out the hard drive every couple of days so we don't have to do a manual backup. Works pretty well.
