Well, I saw no topics were in this section (yet), so I thought I'd ask a quick RAM related question.

Recently, I've seen computers coming out with 756-1024MB RAM. Now, I bought my computer a couple months ago, and it has 512 MB DDR SDRAM. It seems to work okay for me, but I always love a faster computer. So, should I add some more or is 512 pretty standard and I should just keep it the same?

PS: Not that I have the cash to add anymore, but I can get some more mulah.

Well then upgrade if you want I suppose. A lot of the gamer friends I have always are upgrading their comps...but I can still take em out all the same.
I have 128 MB of RD Ram. hehehehe

Only 128? Oh you poor soul, I cry for ye. Well, not really.

Actually, I probably should have mentioned that I EXTENSIVELY play an MMORPG called Final Fantasy XI. So I'm a pretty serious gamer (kinda). Anyway, another questioné; How much does...umm...whatever unit of measurement for RAM would another 512 cost (if I added that, it would make 1024)

That's funny considering all my main systems (4 Main ones) have only 512MB of DDR in them. I see no reason to go higher. Also, I run Win2K on most of my computers (Everyone of my 15 except some that run Linux, WinXP and even 98!)

I never have seen the RAM be a problem over 256 even. I consider 256 the bare minimum for XP and for Win2k I say 128. Anything higher is gravy.

I feel so stupid, but I thought I'd contribute by saying I have a gig of RAM.

What's the difference between SD and DDR?

Ack...FFXI. A sad turn of events for Square Enix. I'm a serious gamer too...which is why I'm working on ASE Games (coming soon)

Really? I was always under the impression that I always needed the best amount of everything (RAM for example). I use XP and like I said, it does work well...besides, I don't like a lot of kinds of gravy, especially mushroom, blech.

But that's beside the point. So I should probably stick to 512?

SD usually refers to the single data rate memory (PC100/133) while DDR mean double data rate memory.

SDR RAM can only transmit on the falling edge (or rising, I think it is falling though) of a clock signal.

DDR RAM can operate on both the rising and falling edge of a clock signal effectively doubling its bandwidth by 2.

my friend just spent 2500$ on a new comp got everything as good as it oculd be, his parents are rich, but he got 2 gb of ram and even 2 100gb hds in a raid and its so freaking aweosme. i am always very tempted to tie him up, put him in a closet, steal his comp and his car and run away, or drive away rather.

Wow, I didn't know all of those specifics. Now Aron, what I'm going to do is copy+paste that into Notepad, memorize it, then tell my friends and pretend I know everything.

Thank you.

It's too late for me to memorize it and pretend like I know what I'm talking about, but at least I know what that is now.

I don't worry about that too much. As long as it's 512 and has Dance Dance Revolution SDRAM, then it should work very well (mine does).
